A degree, not a certificate
Dentists in Sri Lanka complete a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), a multi-year university degree combining classroom study with supervised clinical practice in teaching hospitals — not a short course or an apprenticeship. The University of Peradeniya’s Faculty of Dental Sciences, where Dr. Diana trained, has been producing dentists this way since the 1940s.
Registration is mandatory, not optional
Every practising dentist must be registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) — a public, checkable credential, the same way a UK or Australian dentist would be registered with their own national body.
Professional oversight continues after graduation
Bodies like the Sri Lanka Dental Association keep practitioners connected to ongoing education, shared standards, and peer accountability well beyond the original degree. Dr. Diana’s own role as President of the SLDA Kandy Branch sits inside exactly that system.
What to actually check
- Where they earned their BDS
- Their SLMC registration number
- Any additional specialist certification, such as AAID for implants
